Telling the Brand Story
Directing shoots is a very enjoyable part of my job. I love the collaboration, the strategizing, concepting and then working as a team to get something great. Even when, occasionally, all that planning goes to hell.
Martin Scorsese
We had 45 minutes with Martin Scorsese. Hard stop. We needed to get a cover for DIRECTV’s ACCESS magazine, branding images for his column in the magazine and something that could be used in the cross-channel spots promoting his column as well. As you might expect, I was a little nervous we’d get it all. But Scorsese was great, a true master. As photographer Michael Grecco noted, “He took direction like the best actor would.” He emoted wisdom and thoughtfulness. In between chatting about his favorite new Italian handmade shoes and shooting, we got exactly what we needed. We managed to shoot two set-ups with grooming and a wardrobe change in 40 minutes — we shot 120 images on a gray seamless inside and another 150 images outside on the roof deck of the Directors Guild building.
Oscar DeLaHoya
For De La Hoya, we were shooting for an editorial spread and the cover of ACCESS magazine. My crew got to piggyback on a three-day video shoot for HBO’s 24/7. We followed DeLaHoya all over East LA where he grew up, and where he still owns a neighborhood gym. We covered him training, giving back to his community, and in his role as executive of GoldenBoy Productions. We snagged shots in multiple set-ups and various locations including a skyscraper rooftop in downtown LA at sunset, working the speed bag in his suit, and looking dashingly pensive on LA’s famous First Street bridge.
Clint Bowyer - NASCAR
covered NASCAR twice for DIRECTV. Once at Fontana Raceway, and once at the legendary Talladega Speedway. Both times we were shooting a year's worth of NASCAR HotPass assets. At Fontana, we shot race coverage and worked with an on-air team as they recorded a 30-second spot, getting images for the print and web elements of the campaign. At Talladega, DIRECTV sponsored a car and Clint Bowyer as their driver. We went behind the scenes with Clint and his team. On race day, we were up at the break of dawn in the pit, covering the whole race and the celebration after.
